When an individual steps through a harrowgate, they are forced to relive a traumatic incident from their past. Harrowgates apparently amplify the emotional impact of the memory experience, so that many people emerge from the gateway in a traumatized state. It has been speculated that the harrowgates are powered by emotional negative energy, which could explain why they will not work for mechanical entities.
